DCP Soil Testing

Understand ground conditions before you build or repair

Purlift provides Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) soil testing in Quebec and Eastern Ontario. Testing measures the soil’s resistance to penetration and helps identify potentially weak layers at the locations tested. Before construction or slab repairs, the results help guide further investigation and appropriate work based on site conditions.

What is DCP testing

DCP testing measures how far a steel cone penetrates the soil under a series of hammer blows. The measurements provide a resistance profile at each test location and help identify changes between soil layers. Depending on the test method and site conditions, suitable correlations can help estimate certain soil properties. Results are interpreted alongside other available information. Further investigation may be needed to confirm voids or determine a foundation’s allowable bearing capacity.

How it works

Site review

We review plans, visible distress and any existing geotechnical data, then propose the number and location of test points.

Testing

On open sites, we test from grade. In existing buildings, we work through small holes drilled in the slab. Testing time depends on site access, soil conditions and the number of test locations.

Restoration

Access holes are patched and the area is left clean.

Results

We provide our findings and recommendations according to the schedule agreed for your project.

When to test

Before construction

  • Verifying subgrade, fill and compaction before pouring slabs or footings

  • Locating soft zones between geotechnical boreholes

In existing buildings

  • Slabs or foundations showing settlement or cracking

  • Before designing a stabilization or slab lifting repair

  • Warranty claims, disputes and due diligence

  • Verifying results after remediation

Why choose DCP

Minimally invasive

No excavation, no heavy equipment.

Fast

The time required depends on the number of test locations and site conditions. We plan the work to limit disruption to ongoing activities.

Works indoors

Ideal for warehouses, plants and institutional buildings where a drill rig can't go.

Cost-effective

Targeted testing to focus additional investigation where it is needed.

From diagnosis to solution

Before construction, DCP results help identify areas that may require further investigation or ground improvement. In existing buildings, they contribute to the assessment of settlement and the selection of a repair approach. Where suitable for the site, Purlift can carry out Deep Soil Injection (DSI) using structural polyurethane resin and, if needed, lift and re-level the slab. The proposed solution depends on the test findings, site conditions and project requirements.
